Orofacial pain refers to any kind of pain and discomfort in the area of the face and mouth and is a common complaint for many. Although it poses its diagnostic challenges, it’s important to seek dental or medical assistance for diagnostic and treatment considerations.
Patients not diagnosed with headache or migraine related pain, would usually require a comprehensive medical evaluation for the best treatment path forward and this is best relieved by a dentist or oral surgeon.
In most cases, Orofacial pain can be identified into three diagnostic conditions;
- Mucosal
- Dental
- Masticatory
Mucous orofacial pain is usually caused by consuming tobacco, alcohol or from wearing dentures. Dental related orofacial pain usually originates from tooth decay and common masticatory signs are related to bruxism, joint injuries and loss of teeth.
